Born in Seoul, HEE-WON KIM received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Seoul National University, Kore, and his Ph.D. in Nuclear and Radiological Sciences from the University of Florida, USA. After completing his postdoctoral fellowship at the McKnight Brain Institute, he remained on the faculty of Radiology Department at the University of Florida. Since 2006, He has held joint appointments in the Department of Radiology and Internal Medicine at the University of Southern California, USA. His pivotal research on human in vivo MR imaging and spectroscopy has laid the foundation for future approaches to assessing myocardial microvascular perfusion and the oncological diagnosis of the prostate. Deeply motivated by metabolic imaging modalities, he has participated in numerous cardiovascular MR studies and has received research funding from the US Department of Energy and the National Institute of Health (NIH). During his tenure as Research Director of Hollywood Heart & Vascular Foundation and California Cardiac Institute, His research spanned a broad spectrum – from pharmaceutics to prediction of type I & II diabetes mellitus.
After returning to Korea, he took on the role of Research Director at Coretech Co., where he initiated government-funded development project for an ultra-high-field 7T MR system and MR-guided-HIFU(high intensity focused ultrasound) therapeutic systems.
