The Research Center for Environmental and Clean Technology, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is proudly to announce the 7th International Symposium on Green Technology for Value Chains (GreenVC). This highly anticipated event is a recurring scientific forum that has been held annually since 2016. The 7th International Symposium on Green Technology for Value Chains (GreenVC) will be held under the selected theme of “Unlocking Sustainable Future through Green Technology Innovations,” highlights the importance of research and innovation advancements in promoting sustainability and addressing environmental challenges.

We cordially invite all members of the environmental and clean technology community to participate actively in the symposium by submitting their research work and findings in the topics of interest include, but are not limited to the followings:

  • Environmental remediation and reclamation
  • Green material and sustainable nanotechnology
  • Waste valorization and biorefineries
  • Smart solutions for climate change & environmental monitoring
  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene

This year, the 7th GreenVC 2023 will be held Hybrid From Bandung, Indonesia on November 14th – 15th, 2023, in conjunction with the Workshop on ”Building Competency-Based Entrepreneurship on Research and Technology Innovations” to offer participants with the necessary skills, knowledge, and insight to succeed in the rapidly evolving field of green technology-based entrepreneurship. Only offline participants will get access to this interactive workshop.

The 7th International Symposium on Green Technology for Value Chains (GreenVC) will feature an outstanding lineup of speakers who are leading experts in the field of environmental and clean technology. Our distinguished speakers will come from various countries and backgrounds, representing academia, industry, and government sectors. They will share their insights and experiences on the latest research, innovations, and practical applications in green technology.

Keynote Speakers

Professor. Taro Yamauchi
Hokkaido University, Japan

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

Prof. Taro Yamauchi, Ph.D is a Professor at the Faculty of Health Science, Hokkaido University. He has also worked at Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) as a professor and the project leader of ‘Sanitation Value Chain’ between 2015 and 2021. After finishing a cross-appointment between RIHN and HU, he became the Director at Hokkaido University Center for Environmental and Health Sciences in April 2022. He also an Executive member of International Society for the Study of Human Growth and Clinical Auxology (ISGA); Vice-president of International Association of Physiological Anthropology (IAPA); and Chief Representative of International Society for Sanitation Studies (ISSS). His research primarily focus on Evolutionary perspective on diet, physical activity and body composition, Nutritional adaptation, physical fitness, activity pattern, QOL and basic human needs of local communities, and WASH: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. He has conducted research in Asia (Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Japan), Africa (Zambia, Cameroon, Burkina Faso), and the Oceania (Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands). 

Professor. Jhy-Chern Liu
National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan

Waste Treatment and Recovery

Prof. Jhy-Chern Liu, Ph.D., serves as the Vice President of the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech). He holds the position of professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, specializing in industrial wastewater treatment and reuse, as well as the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from e-waste. He has various international networks, one of which is in Indonesia. He is a part of the Science and Technology Innovation Center for Circular Economy and Green Innovative Resources (STIC-CEGIR), which is a collaborative research center between Taiwan Tech and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS).

Professor. Benjamin Hsiao
Stony Brook University, USA

Green Technology for Environment

Prof. Benjamin Hsiao, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Professor in Chemistry at Stony Brook University. He is recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the Materials Research Society, and the National Academy of Inventors. He is an AAAS-Lemelson Invention Ambassador and an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland in Australia. Furthermore, he has received numerous awards, including the Cooperative Research Award from the Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society, as well as the NSF Special Creativity Award and the DuPont Young Faculty Award.

Professor. Shameen Jinadasa
University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka

Wastewater Treatment and Reuse, Water Conservation and Efficiency

Prof. Dr. Shameen N. Jinadasa is a Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. His research primarily focuses on the development of sustainable water and wastewater management technologies, biological wastewater treatment methods for industrial wastewaters, innovative methodologies in environmental protection, and the use of constructed wetlands for water quality management in tropical regions. He is a member of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science and has established several international research collaborations with institutions in China, Norway, the Netherlands, Singapore, Japan, and Australia. He won several prestigious awards, namely the PIFI Research Fellowship Award, The ANSO under the Auspices of the Chinese Academy of Science, the President’s Invitation as Distinguished Scientist and the Fulbright Advanced Research and Lecturing Awards of the United States-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission.

Dr. Nasim Amiralian
The University of Queensland, Australia

Environmental Nanotechnology

Dr. Nasim Amiralian is the Group Leader of Bio-inspired Materials research at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Her pioneering research uses nanocellulose platform technology to develop innovative materials for diverse applications, including biodegradable packaging materials, medical textiles, and bioelectronics. She has received a number of awards including: The Eight Australian Women Who Are Shaking Up the World Of Science (Marie Claire, 2020); one of Australia’s Top 5 Scientists (ABC/UNSW, 2018); Queensland Women in STEM Prize- judges choice award (2017); Women in Technology, Life Sciences, and/or Infotech Rising Star Award (2016); AIBN Research Excellence Award (2016); a Class of 2014 Future Leader award; and the Best Poster Prize at the Australian Nanotechnology Network ECR Entrepreneurship workshop (2015).

Dr. Shamila Azman
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia

Environmental Monitoring

Dr. Shamila binti Azman holds the position of Director at the Department of Water and Environmental Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Her research interests include determining nutrient over-enrichment and developing nutrient management strategies to control eutrophication in lakes and estuaries, studying land-use impact and variation in biochemical properties on intertidal seagrass shoals, assessing gastropods as indicators of heavy metal contamination in coastal areas, studying depuration of gastropods, and designing and developing urban food production systems for resilience. Dr. Shamila binti Azman is a member of several professional associations, including the International Water Association, the Malaysian Analytical Chemist Society, and the World Seagrass Association.

Dr. Tasdiyanto
Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia

The Government Policy of Nature Resources, Conservation, and Environment Monitoring

Dr. Tasdiyanto serves as an Expert Staff of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia (KLHK RI) in the field of Natural Resource Economics. He obtained his doctoral degree in Environmental Science from Gajahmada University in 2010. Before assuming his current position, he gained experience as the head of ecoregion offices in various provinces in Indonesia starting in the 2000s. Apart from his role as a bureaucrat, he actively engages in research and studies on environmental quality in Indonesia, providing a basis for policy-making. Since 2010, Dr. Tasdiyanto Rohadi and his team have conducted diligent research on the environmental quality of Java Island, with a particular focus on Jakarta.

Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia

Environmental Remediation


Prof. Edwan Kardena, Ph.D., is a professor at the Bandung Institute of Technology specializing in Environmental Remediation. In addition to his role as an educator, he serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research interests encompass Environmental Biotechnology, Bioremediation, Wastewater Treatment, and Bio-process. One of the results of his research has been commercialized, namely PETREA (Petroleum Remediating Agent).

Dr. Annalisa Chiappone
Universit’a di Cagliari, Italy

Green Nanomaterial

Dr. Annalisa Chiappone holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Chemical Science and Geology department at the University of Cagliari. Her research focuses on the development of innovative polymers suitable for 3D printing, with applications spanning various fields, including biomedics, optics, and sensing. A particular emphasis of her work lies in the utilization of polymers derived from natural sources and those that can be recycled.

Dr. Latifah Jasmani
Forest Research Institute, Malaysia

Pulp and Paper Technology from Non-wood Resources

Dr. Latifah Jasmani currently works as a Senior Researcher at the Forest Products Division, Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM). Her research revolves around Nanocellulose and Pulp and Paper. Her ongoing project is focused on the ‘Development of Thin Film from Tropical Forest Species’

Dr. rer.nat Neni Sintawardani
National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

Dr. rer. nat. Neni Sintawardani is a senior researcher at the Research Center for Environmental and Clean Technology – National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in Indonesia. Since 2003, she has conducted joint research on Sustainable Sanitation with Japanese institutions, emphasizing the introduction and application of a bio-toilet system (dry toilet technology) in urban and rural areas using value chain approaches.

Radboud University, Netherlands

Water Management and Health

Dr. G.W. Geerling is a senior researcher at Radboud University, The Netherlands. He also works as a senior researcher at Deltares. His research focus includes water and health, river management, landscape ecology, and public health.

Dr. Eng. Diana Rahayuning Wulan
National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia

Environmental Monitoring

Diana Rahayuning Wulan is presently affiliated with the Center for Enviromental and Cleaner Technology, BRIN, where she conducts research in the field of Environmental Engineering. She is also a member of the Collaborative Research Center of Zero Waste and Sustainability between BRIN and Universitas Katolik Widya Mandala Surabaya (UKWMS).

We accept full paper submission of new and exciting findings on the topics of this symposium (review paper or literature study is not accepted). All papers will be peer reviewed prior to acceptance. The approval for which and where the papers will be published is solely based on the editors’ decision.

  • All accepted paper will be considered for publication in the Open Access IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science (EES), which is part of IOP Conference Series, indexed by Scopus. All papers published in IOP Conference Series are fully citable and upon publication will be free to download.
  • Selected papers will be published in:

By Airplane
The closest airport for long-distance travelers is BIJB Kertajati West Java International (KJT), located in Majalengka. An alternative option would be the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta. Once you have arrived at either KJT or CGK, you can easily reach Bandung City by taking a Bus/Shuttle Bus service (such as Damri, Cititrans, Primajasa, etc).

By Train
You can take the train to Bandung station or take the fast train “Whoosh” from Jakarta and stop at Padalarang station.

Towards the Venue
After arriving in Bandung city, you can easily order an online ride through apps like Gojek’s Go-Car or Grab’s GrabCar. Alternatively, traditional taxi services are available throughout the city of Bandung.
