International Strategic Meeting on Scientific Pathways for Sustainable Livestock Industry Transformation:
Collaborative Solutions for Global Nutrition Resilience and Economic Growth
As the global community advances toward the 2030 climate and sustainable development targets, the livestock and agrifood sectors face a critical dual challenge: ensuring global nutrition security while simultaneously reducing environmental impacts across production systems and supply chains. Addressing this challenge requires systemic transformation across the livestock value chain, including improved resource efficiency, circular bioeconomy approaches, climate-smart production systems, and science-based policy frameworks.
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of the Republic of Indonesia is hosting the International Strategic Meeting on Scientific Pathways for Sustainable Livestock Industry Transformation 2026, a global forum designed to bring together policymakers, scientists, industry leaders, international organisations, and development partners to advance science-based solutions for sustainable livestock systems. This event is technically supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM), FAO Indonesia, and FAO Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership.
The meeting aims to strengthen international collaboration and accelerate innovation pathways that support sustainable livestock production, low-carbon agrifood systems, and resilient global food supply chains. Through dialogue between science, industry, and policy communities, the event will explore how emerging research, technological innovation, and sustainable investment can drive the transformation of livestock industries worldwide.
In this context, BRIN highlights the critical role of research, innovation, and industrial transformation in supporting sustainable livestock development. The programme will also incorporate methodological discussions and technical exchanges related to internationally recognised assessment tools and frameworks, including approaches for environmental performance evaluation, carbon footprint measurement, and life-cycle based sustainability analysis.
Through this international platform, BRIN seeks to position Indonesia as a leading hub for research collaboration and policy dialogue on sustainable livestock transformation globally.
Objectives
The objectives of the event are to:
- Strengthen international scientific collaboration on sustainable livestock and agrifood systems.
- Facilitate dialogue between research institutions, policymakers, industry actors, and financial institutions to support sustainable livestock sector transformation.
- Identify investment opportunities and innovation pathways that accelerate the green transition of livestock and dairy industries.
- Promote collaborative research partnerships to advance sustainable livestock innovation globally.
- Enhance technical capacity in livestock environmental assessment methodologies, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and carbon footprint analysis.
Scope of Implementation
The meeting will consist of several key components designed to connect scientific research with policy development and industry implementation:
Technical Capacity Sessions
Training and knowledge exchange on environmental assessment methodologies, sustainability metrics, and livestock production systems.
Scientific and Policy Dialogues
High-level discussions involving international experts, ministries, research organisations, and development partners on strategies for sustainable livestock transformation.
Investment and Industry Forum
Dialogue between industry leaders, financial institutions, and policymakers to explore opportunities for sustainable investment and sector development.
Field Learning Programme
Technical visits to livestock production ecosystems and dairy sector facilities in Bandung to observe sustainable industry practices and value-chain integration.
