The Comparative Education Society of Asia (CESA) is an association of educational scholars across Asia and beyond engaged in the comparative study of educational systems, traditions, and practices. Founded in 1995, CESA promotes Comparative Education as a scholarly field across Asia while amplifying Asian voices in educational debates worldwide.
CESA holds biennial conferences across Asia—including China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Pakistan—bringing together scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to exchange knowledge, share diverse perspectives, and foster collaboration across the region. As a member of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES), CESA also contributes actively to the development of the global comparative education community.
Twenty-four years after CESA was last held in Indonesia in Bandung in 2003, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), through its Research Organization for Humanities and Social Sciences, is honored to welcome the CESA community back to Indonesia for the 15th Biennial Conference (CESA 2027) in Jakarta, from 22–26 November 2027. Together with Hiroshima University, BINUS University, The SMERU Research Institute, and the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI), BRIN will host this five-day gathering under the spirit of Gotong Royong—Indonesia’s longstanding tradition of collective cooperation and shared responsibility.
In an era of rapid digitalisation and technological transformation, placing people—learners, educators, and communities—at the heart of educational change has never been more important. Under the theme “Human-Centered Education in the Digital Age: Voices from Asia and Beyond,” CESA 2027 invites scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to critically reflect on how education can remain responsive to human needs, values, cultures, and diverse contexts amid accelerating technological change.
The conference seeks to foreground Asian perspectives and experiences while creating space for dialogue across regions and traditions. It aims to explore how education can harness the possibilities of digital technologies while safeguarding human connection, cultural diversity, inclusion, equity, and meaningful participation—working together toward more human-centered education systems for the future.
On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 15th Biennial Conference of the Comparative Education Society of Asia (CESA 2027), to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
CESA Conference 2027 provides an important international forum for scholars, researchers, educators, policymakers, practitioners, and students to engage in critical dialogue on contemporary issues in comparative and international education. The conference brings together diverse perspectives and experiences from across Asia and beyond, fostering meaningful conversations on how education systems, institutions, communities, and societies respond to changing social, cultural, technological, economic, and environmental contexts.
Building on the longstanding tradition of the Comparative Education Society of Asia, CESA 2027 seeks to strengthen scholarly exchange and promote deeper understanding of educational transformations across different contexts. The conference will provide opportunities to share research findings, exchange ideas, explore emerging challenges and possibilities, and develop collaborative initiatives that contribute to more inclusive, equitable, and transformative education.
Hosted in Jakarta, Indonesia, the conference also offers an opportunity to engage with the rich diversity of Indonesia and its educational experiences. As one of the world’s most culturally and geographically diverse countries, Indonesia provides a particularly valuable context for comparative education, where local knowledge, national policies, global influences, and community practices intersect in shaping educational change.
We are confident that your participation and contributions will enrich the intellectual discussions of CESA 2027 and help foster new collaborations and perspectives across Asia and beyond. We warmly invite you to join us in Jakarta for this important gathering and to be part of a vibrant community committed to advancing comparative education research and practice.
We look forward to welcoming you to CESA 2027 in Jakarta, Indonesia!

The theme “Human-Centered Education in the Digital Age: Voices from Asia and Beyond” places people at the heart of educational transformation in an era of rapid digitalisation and technological advancement, including AI. It invites scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to reflect on how education can remain responsive to learners’ needs, experiences, values, well-being, and diverse contexts while harnessing technology to enhance educational quality and access. By highlighting “Voices from Asia and Beyond,” the theme creates a space for diverse perspectives to explore how cultural, social, and local contexts can shape more inclusive, equitable, meaningful, and human-centred approaches to education in the digital age.
This sub-theme focuses on learners, teachers, and communities as human beings with dignity, agency, values, and cultural identities. It explores lived experiences, meanings, and practices of digital learning in classrooms and communities, and asks how technology can serve people and their diverse contexts rather than the other way around.
Topics:
This sub-theme examines the structures that determine whether digital education is fair and meaningful: policy, governance, economics, infrastructure, institutions, and international cooperation. It asks who holds power, who makes decisions, and who gains access, and how human-centered approaches can be sustained at the system level.
Topics:
This sub-theme looks ahead. It explores what kind of education is needed to remain humane and responsible toward society and the planet in the long term, drawing on futures thinking, posthuman perspectives, and education for sustainability.
Topics:
This sub-theme offers a critical lens on digital and AI in education. It questions whether digitalisation is truly human-centered or whether it reinforces existing hegemonies, inequalities, and ecological harm. Contributions may test assumptions, present empirical evidence, and amplify decolonial and Global South voices.
Topics:
